"In Julie Fagan’s work, seemingly normal domestic buildings are set in flat chromatic landscapes, their solidity suggested only by their shadows. On closer inspection they reveal themselves to be nonsensical. They are depictions of houses – as if bought off-plan. A mirage. A visitor set down in a strange landscape.
These strange ‘model homes’ entice us to imagine those idyllic spaces outside of the big city. They tug at our yearnings for tranquillity and isolation. But when we arrive there, do they live up to our expectations? Can we handle the isolation we are confronted with? They transport us into their wide-open spaces, but our psyche travels with us and we can’t escape ourselves."
